Gran in Slam for Beating Dog to Death

The family of a 75-year-old woman jailed for bashing a dog to death have slammed her sentence as "ridiculous".

"Granny" Mila Matijevic, of Australia, is serving seven days of a 30-day term for the savage bashing death of her neighbour's five year old, short-haired German Pointer, "Pepe". After Pepe killed three chickens, Granny hit Pepe with a garden hoe 13 times while onlookers tried to call her off. Witnesses stated, "They were heartless. My neighbour was shocked to see the condition of the dog when they were still beating it. It had no eyes."

As Pepe lay wounded on the floor, Granny's son arrived and hit Pepe once more with a piece of wood. The son also received a one month suspended jail sentence.

Police took Pepe to a vet where he was found to have severe injuries to his head and internal organs and and subsequently died.

Pepe's owner said he had owned Pepe since he was a pup and no court-issued punishment would compensate him. "Pepe was my companion, he was part of my family," he said.

Too bad neither one of them did any serious jail time.
