Are cats digging up your garden? Try these simple repellents before shelling out good money for store-bought chemical repellents. Bonus - They may also keep other small mammals such as moles away too!
- freshly ground pepper (the hotter, the better);
- dusting or spraying the area with any of the following items -- talcum powder, lime, blood meal, strongly saturated soaps (such as lavendar or eucalyptus) and/or deodorants, hair, old aftershave, rotten eggs, medicated body powder, pine oils, moth crystals, crushed or dried peppermint leaves;
- plants such as garlic, spurge and fritillaria.
You can also try these mixtures:
- 2 parts cayenne powder, 3 parts dry mustard powder and 5 parts flour - mix in adequate water and spray in areas you wish to repel cats. Several applications should be enough to get the cat not to come back; or
- make your own spray with a finely chopped garlic bulb, a finely chopped medium onion, a teaspoon of Tabasco sauce, and a tablespoon of red, black or cayenne pepper to a quart of warm water. Steep the mixture for two hours, strain, add a teaspoon of liquid soap and spray away. Be sure to wear gloves when applying the solution and avoid contact with your eyes.
