"Hear our humble prayer, O God, for our friends the animals, especially for animals who are suffering; for animals that are overworked, underfed and cruelly treated; for all wistful creatures in captivity that beat their wings against bars; for any that are hunted or lost or deserted or frightened or hungry; for all that must be put to death. We entreat for them all Thy mercy and pity, and for those who deal with them we ask a heart of compassion and gentle hands and kindly words. Make us, ourselves, to be true friends to animals, and so to share the blessings of the merciful."
- Albert Schweitzer
I looked at all the caged animals in the shelter...the cast offs of human society. I saw in their eyes love and hope, fear and dread, sadness and betrayal. And I was angry.
"God", I said, "this is terrible! Why don't you do something?" God was silent for a moment, and then he spoke softly, "I have done something", he replied, "I created you."

I AM AN ANIMAL RESCUER
My joy is to assist God's creatures, My soul is fulfilled by meeting their needs. I have bought their food with my last dime, I have stroked their battered heads with a tender hand, And I have hugged creatures trembling and afraid. I have fallen in love a thousand times And I have cried into the fur of their lifeless bodies. I don't often use the word "pet" but prefer "companion" and "friend" instead. I see those lost at the roadside, those for whom I have arrived too late, And my mind races And my heart aches. I will hand-raise a kitten And make friends with a bird. No creature is unworthy of my time. Violence and abuse makes me hurt for the world But each Rescue gives me new hope for mankind. We are a growing and determined army And we are making a difference every day. There is nothing more necessary than feeding a castoff, Nothing more rewarding than saving each life, No higher recognition than watching them thrive. There is no greater joy than seeing a creature play who only days ago was too weak to eat. And I wonder at the moment of my death, Will I feel the touch of your paw, The soft warmth of your nose And your eager spirit Leading me to our next adventure Together? I am an Animal Rescuer. My work is never done. My home is never quiet. My wallet is always empty, But my Heart is Always Full.
